Metaphors
Over the years I would say the best way and metaphor to describe how our society is shaped is through the melting pot where the differences between everyone ends up melting down and starts to unify. However, times have changed where diversity is more recognized however, at the same time since due to all the wars and the downfall of the economy, the melting pot is wiping out differences and not respecting each individual. So I would say the metaphor I propose would be Reverend Jesse Jackson's as referring to the United States as a rainbow and a family quilt because the United States is all about freedom, and power, and all cultures coming together and making up America. A family quilt is something people are proud of, it makes up their family, recognizes their similarities and differences and embraces each individual which is what the United States is about, and it is what it stands for. Since our society has also become more liberal over the past few years, referring to our society as a rainbow makes most sense as well because a rainbow is beautiful with different colors not just one. Same goes with our society. We're all not the same, we each are different and all have something to contribute to our society.

I really appreciate your views on the melting pot metaphor. While at first, when someone says the term "melting pot" a positive connotation comes to mind, after thinking and analyzing it as you have one comes to realize it's not that awesome. In a melting pot, everyone melts together into one. This is appealing in that society likes to appear loyal and united, but it is also not appealing, since people like to celebrate their individuality. Therefore, like you said, the rainbow metaphor works a lot better. It's a nicer image, still with a positive connotation. After further analysis, it holds up a lot better too. Everyone is a separate color and individual, however, you couldn't have the rainbow without each and every one.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that rainbow is the best metaphor to describe our America society. Everyone has their individual culture and believes, we cannot force everybody to only believe in one faith. Therefore, our country is exactly as same as the rainbow, there are many different colors in it, representing the diversity of our country and people. I like how you point out the melting pot has wiped out all the differences and doesn’t respect each individual. When everything melts together, there is only one thing left and each individual is the same. This is not what we are, so I support you that our country is like rainbow.
